The Vision and Working Board of Metro Denver Promotion of Letters

We envision a writing community for kids in Denver, a place where children can take the time to enjoy writing and its counterparts. More often than not, schools cannot provide a place in which creativity and discovery are fostered with time and one-on-one attention. Students too often view writing as yet another task to be completed, for which they will be assessed and graded – when, in reality, writing is a vehicle for expression and communication, for publication and storytelling.

Eventually, Metro Denver Promotion of Letters will be able to provide space for writing, individualized tutoring, evening and summer workshops, field trips for schoolchildren, and cadres of volunteers to assist writing teachers in their classrooms. We hope to connect a community of writers and readers, of all ages, in Denver.

Right now we are just starting our journey. Beginning with some students and teachers who were interested in the 826 workshops begun by Dave Eggers (Pulitzer-Prize –winning author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius) and former teacher Ninive Calegari-Clements, groups of Denverites have decided to collaborate and create our own version of a writing tutoring center here in the Mile High City. We have a few committed individuals who are creating programming, looking for a location, and attempting to raise money and connections. Now, more than ever, we need help from other committed people who are willing to volunteer their time, effort, and passion for writing to students.

The Theme
Following in the footsteps of the 826 centers, we would like to have a writing center and a commercial storefront that invites the public to participate in our fun. After much brain-storming, the local Denver founders decided that Denver would most benefit from an old-time mercantile store, one that connects our Western heritage with our modern, technological present. Latching onto a specific sci-fi genre, steampunk, we found our inspiration. Steampunk pieces celebrate the Wild West and Victorian eras all while looking forward to the final frontier of space and time travel. We are, in a way, all little steampunks, driven to rebel against our heritage while at the same time using it to power us along the way.
